“There was no shortage of suffering going on out there.” Those were the concise words of Lee McKinley as he crossed the finish line of the second annual Lake Sonoma 50-mile endurance run. The race was once again run on the first warm day of spring. OK, it was nothing compared with last year’s 92°F, but even 78°F can feel awfully warm in March. And the course, with 10,500 feet of climb, is unrelenting. There are only three significant climbs – all between miles 19 and 28 – but the rest of the course profile looks a lot like the EKG of a crystal meth junkie who has just downed about four Red Bulls. The first and last 75 yards are the only flat parts of the entire run.
Runners were treated to lush green hills with a spectacular display of wildflowers. Wild irises, lupine, blue dicks, and poppies were seemingly everywhere.
Jon Olsen of Modesto and Suzanna Bon of Sonoma were the winners, both well faster than last year’s heat-reduced winning times, and so get to claim course records. Suzanna’s is perhaps the most impressive performance of the day, since she had spent the previous two weeks coordinating the race’s 100 or so volunteers and decided to run only two days before the race.
The winners and age-group champions were presented with large format bottles of Dry Creek Valley premium wines. Thanks to Lake Sonoma Winery, Vineyard of Pasterick, Passalacqua Winery, and Dry Creek Winery for contributing the wine. The race raised more than $2000 for the DCVA Scholarship Fund.
The run, which took place on March 28 was organized by Dry Creek Valley residents John Medinger and Lisa Henson, along with Greg Carter of Cloverdale and Suzanna Bon of Sonoma.
